23 Things I’ve Learnt in 23 Years

June 3, 2017

It’s my birthday! Today marks my 23rd birthday… twenty-three… is it just me or is 23 the odd year where you’re kinda in limbo before becoming a fully fledged adult? It’s the birthday where everyone’s kinda like meh...

A lot happened at the start of my twenties. At 21 I finished my degree, set up my own company and moved to the other side of the world by myself which I never thought I would do. Ever! At 22 I was celebrating my birthday overseas for the second year in a row, started this blog, made amazing business connections, really grew into my personality (thanks, solo travel!) and again moved overseas.

Over the years I’ve learnt so much about myself and how I view the world. So here it goes… 23 things I’ve learnt in 23 years.

23 Things I Learnt In 23 Years

  1. Be where your feet are.

Learn to appreciate and take in where you are now instead of constantly rushing and looking into the future.

  2. Say yes to new things!

Experience as much as you can, while you can.

  3. You are your biggest critic.

Give yourself some slack, you don’t always have to be so hard on yourself.

  4. Friends come and go.

Don’t hold onto toxic relationships. Like many things in life, quality is better than quantity.

  5. Practice the art of saving early.

It will come in handy later on! Thank god younger me had a brain and saved, I would never have been able to afford half the things I’ve done if I hadn’t.

  6. Stop relying on everyone else.

It’s your job, not everyone else’s, to get you where you want to go.

  7. Don’t be a pushover.

    Stand up for yourself!

  8. Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you.

  9. Love yourself.

Accept your body and love your perfections and imperfections. You’re one of a kind so don’t try and be someone else.

  10. When one door closes, two more open.

As my dad always says “when one door closes, two more open”. If you get knocked down it’s not the end of the world, there’s always more options out there.

  11. Appreciate the little things.

The little moments in life can sometimes be the greatest.

  12. Be kind.

    To yourself and others.

  13. Travel as much as you can.

It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.

  14. Don’t let your fears control you.

Nothing good ever comes from comfort zones. Be brave, be strong and don’t worry about the what if’s.

  15. Some people are just horrible.

Whether their in your personal or business life some people are just downright horrible. Don’t let them bring you down.

  16. You don’t know everything.

Life is one big learning curve. You will never know everything and you won’t always be right.

  17. Believe in yourself.

Believe in yourself and your abilities. If you don’t who will?

  18. Take care of yourself.

Take care of your body. Find a form of exercise you actually like so it’s not a chore, don’t poison your body and take care of your skin. You only get one so take care of it!

  19. Nothing is too hard unless you make it.

Stop saying “Nah I can’t-do that, it’s just too hard” because it’s not. It’s only too hard because you’re making it hard for yourself.

  20. Stop procrastinating.

Guess what you’ll still have to do it. So just do it!

  21. Don’t let social media fool you.

Social media is an extremely exaggerated version of someone’s idea of the perfect lifestyle. 90% of the time it’s fake so don’t feel the need to idolise the instafamous.

  22. It’s okay not to have it all figured out.

Not everyone knows what they want and where they’ll be in 5 years time and that’s completely okay. Things change. You change. Take things as they come and figure it out along the way.

  23. Be happy!

The most important thing in life is to be happy! Smile more, laugh more and live more!

This is a great list! You seem so young to have accomplished many wonderful things! I’ll be turning 23 in a few weeks.. I’m feeling the same way about it kinda ‘meh’ but still another year of life to celebrate 🙂

I admire people who travel alone. I’m 27 and I can add another point – changes are good, let’s not be afraid of them!

I think everyone should travel alone at least once but I’m very much a travel with friends or parnter person too!

      Yes! Very good point!

These are so true! It’s good to list and publish these things as a reminder.

This is a great list! I resonated with each point, really. In July I’m going on a solo trip, 4 days after I turn 26, and I’m super excited. I might add, after #16, it’s OK to ask for help 🙂

I will remember these for sure! Thanks xx
