Flying can be daunting and mistakes can be made. Even the smallest mistakes can seem like a big deal after a full day of travel but luckily once you’re aware of these little mistakes, they’re easy to avoid and simple to prepare for!
HAVING A LATE NIGHT BEFORE AN EARLY MORNING FLIGHT
The last thing you want to do is sleep through your alarm and miss your early morning flight. Don’t think you’re going to catch up on some shut-eye on the plane either as it is never going to be a restful sleep. Do yourself a favour and go to bed at a reasonable time.
NOT HAVING ANY CASH ON YOU
Although in this day and age most things are done electronically it is always super handy to carry cash on you. Try and have at least $20 in local and foreign cash on you as emergency money if an atm or EFTPOS machine is down, this could be for food or transport.
NOT CARRYING ESSENTIALS IN YOUR CARRY ON
Our luggage never made it to Amsterdam with us, turns out it was having a holiday of its own in London. After travelling for over 25 hours all I wanted was a nice warm shower and clean clothes but nope! That was all in my bag in London.
Luckily our bags were delivered to our hotel the next day but lesson learned, from now on I always pack any essential items and a change of clothes in my carry on.
NOT TAKING SOME FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT
Long-haul flights can be bad enough without the added drama of failed in-flight entertainment. You don’t want to be stuck if you get a glitchy headphone port or screen. In my carry on I always pack my Kindle, earphones, and phone all set with music and movies.
NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER
Humidity levels on planes are un-naturally low so you need to make sure your body is getting enough water to function properly. Throughout your travel day try and have at least 300ml of water every hour and avoid alcohol as this only dehydrates you further.
You aren’t allowed to bring a full drink bottle of water through security but you can bring an empty bottle to refill throughout your trip.
FORGETTING TO BRING A PEN
Having a pen on a plane is like standing in the schoolyard with a pack of chewing gum. Everyone wants it! Always be ready for customs or any other forms you may need to fill out by always carrying a pen on you.
