Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work as a lift operator? They wake up while it’s still dark out, shovel large amounts of snow, tolerate the harshest of weather and they do all this for pennies, should be a bad job right? Wrong! It’s anything but.
While everyone else is inside, dealing with angry customers, picking up dirty dishes and cleaning toilets,
So what does a typical day as a lifty look like?
6:30am – Wake up time!
It’s time to wake up and get ready for the day. Check the forecast and dress appropriately or else you are in for a very long miserable day.
7:30am – Morning Meeting
Head to the locker rooms and grab all your gear ready for the morning meeting where you’ll get the rundown for the day, stats, conditions, and any other information you might need.
7:50am – Go to your Lift
Now depending on your lift you may have a quick walk or you may have to upload and ride to your lift, if the latter, take full advantage of those first tracks!
8:00am – Get Your Lift Ready For The Day
The lift maintenance guys will already have your lift up and running for you. Your job is to get the lift ready for the public. This includes setting up maze gates, putting out signs and benches, shovelling away any snow that’s fallen overnight, re-building the ramp, flipping seats and brushing off any snow.
9:00am – Open To The Public
Once you have clearance from Dispatch to open, the rest of the day is spent loading and unloading guests, chatting with customers, maintaining your ramp, and most importantly having fun!
The best thing about being a lifty is our ride breaks. At the Lake Louise Ski Resort, we rotate top and bottom shifts between three people. You will have three different positions you work over your week.
- Base Opening operators will have one hour break and finish early, which is about 3 pm.
- Top O
peningoperators will have two one hour breaks and will close the base.
- Late Operator will start at 10 am and close the top.
3:30pm – Start To Pack Down
Depending how many guests are still on the hill, slowing start packing away everything that was put out in the morning, chip, shovel and
4:05pm – Close Down Your Lift
Once the last chair is off, park the lift for the night and do all close down procedures. If you’re the top operator your lucky enough to ride down with no public on the hill besides the odd straggler. Meet up with other
4:40pm – Heading Home
By this time you will be clocking out and heading home for the night ready to start it all again tomorrow!
