Vanlife is getting more and more popular because … well, it’s awesome! It’s such a great experience but a lot of people are put off by the lack of certain comforts so to put your minds at ease, I’ve answered the most asked vanlife questions!
WHERE DO YOU GO TO THE BATHROOM?
This is the most asked question by far! And the answer is super simple… There are public bathrooms everywhere! Rest stops, petrol stations, restaurants, supermarkets etc. And if there’s nothing around… well there’s always nature!
HOW DO YOU SHOWER?
If van life teaches you anything it will be your understanding of what clean really is. We tried to have “real” showers every three to four days either in trucks stops, campsites or public showers. Most days we showered in lakes and rivers, some of which were absolutely freezing!!! We also have a Coleman Solar Camp Shower we used if we set up camp for a while. Baby wipes are also an important part of vanlife!
HOW DO YOU FIND PLACES TO SLEEP?
IOverlander is the bee’s knees! It has so many amazing free campsites with real reviews from people who have actually stayed there. It has everything from free wilderness camping, good old Walmarts, and paid established campgrounds. There is also a lot of places marked for showers as well as good mechanics and restaurants. The app is completely free and can be used offline. We also used freecampsites.net when we were in reception.
IS IT SAFE?
The only issue we ever had was a silly drunk driver try to open our door in the middle of the night. A quick cough to let them know someone was inside was enough to warn them away, apart from that we never had any problems! If you don’t feel safe in a place all you need to do is keep going until you find a place you like. It’s also a good idea to have some kind of self-defence item in the van for emergency situations, fingers crossed you never have to use it!
HOW DO YOU COOK YOUR MEALS?
We have a 2 burner propane camp stove as well as all the kitchen utensils we need in the van. We either make our food on picnic tables, makeshift tables or on the floor of our van.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR FOOD FROM GOING OFF?
Unless we’re setting up camp for awhile we normally only shop for a night or two to reduce waste. Anything that needs to be refrigerated we put in our 12-volt cooler we plug in when driving or into our portable battery. Little tip: don’t leave it plugged into the car and forget about it… you may end up with a flat battery in the middle of nowhere like us. Oops!
